    The Experience

For 862 miles, the beautiful Pacific Coast winds along from Portland to San Francisco with breathtaking vistas of sea and shore, offering one of the most picturesque bike routes in America. Journey to the heart of California’s Golden Coast when you embark on this 10-day randonnée cycling adventure with professional ride organizers.

Less focused on racing and more on rider camaraderie and accomplishment, randonneuring offers the ultimate challenge to cyclists looking to push their limits. Randonneurs are self-sufficient, organizing their own supplies and repairs, and plotting out long-distance “brevets” (ride sections) with set time goals.

The perfect host city for this randonnée’s departure, Portland has become the cycling capital of North America. Riders will begin in the wine country of the Willamette Valley, as the route encompasses the many faces of West Coast riding: the climbs of Highway 101, the dirt roads and unpaved paths of the Rapha Continental, and the tranquil expanses of the Humboldt State Forest. Along the way, riders will stay in the artists’ villages and fishing hamlets of the Oregon and California coasts. The final few miles of the ride take in the Golden Gate Bridge before a reception at the Rapha Cycle Club San Francisco.

IfOnly adventurers can expect an itinerary similar to the following:

    Arrival Day

Fly into Portland International Airport and transfer to modern boutique hotel The Ace Hotel selected for it’s signature Pacific Northwest style and prime location in downtown Portland. This evening you will dine with the group and prepare for an early AM transfer to the Willamette Valley.

    Day 1: Portland — Newport

Depart Portland early and make your way through the fertile Willamette Valley, passing orchards, vineyards, and fields of hops. Eventually, you will pass into the deeply forested coastal mountain range before arriving at the Pacific Ocean.

    Day 2: Newport — Bandon

From Newport, home of the iconic Oregon brewery Rogue Ales, you will continue south along the rugged coast with scenic breaks at Cape Perpetua, Heceta Head, Cape Arago, pushing on to your final destination, Bandon known for its dunes.

Day 3: Bandon — Gold Beach

With the trade winds at your back today, you will roll along the rugged southern coastline, passing through wildlife refuges, past the Cape Blanco lighthouse and Port Orford before arriving at a seaside resort stop-over in Gold Beach.

Day 4: Gold Beach — Klamath

Today we cross into California, but the stretch of the Oregon coast before you do is as rugged as it gets. You will weave in and out along this quiet stretch of Highway 101. Rich in history, this remote coastline was once a bustling fishing center, with numerous fish canneries and large-scale Redwood forest mills. The final destination is the small village of Requa and the Historic Requa Inn. Built in 1914, this small inn is nestled in an International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, and one of the longest continuously inhabited places in California. Innkeepers Janet and Marty will welcome you to their lovely property.

    Day 5: Klamath — Ferndale

Today you will follow some lesser-known side roads through the deep redwood forests, and cross the mighty Klamath River. Filled with salmon, steelhead, and rainbow trout, it’s one of the most important and longest free-flowing stretches of river on the West Coast. Following in the footsteps of the fur trappers and Gold Rush miners, you will make your way to the gateway of the Redwood Empire before passing through Eureka and the small Victorian village of Ferndale.

    Day 6: Ferndale — Garberville

You and your group will go off the grid today, heading deep in the coastal wilderness to follow the famed Lost Coast Road through some of the most secluded regions of California. After you spend nearly 65 miles in this isolated region, you will finally emerge into the remarkable Humboldt Redwoods and the Avenue of the Giants, a historic, scenic route aptly named due to the towering trees lining the road.

    Day 7: Garberville — Mendocino

You will wind your way along Eel River before heading towards the coast again via the Redwoods Highway and Highway One. You will land at the ocean at Fort Bragg, a picturesque, rugged California frontier town founded prior to the American Civil War. From here there’s a quick side step to one of many lighthouses along this remote coastline, before wrapping up the day’s ride in the artist colony of Mendocino. Enjoy a glass of Mendocino pinot at the California-French restaurant Café Beaujolais.

Day 8: Mendocino — Timber Cove

A tailwind follows you along the picturesque coastline today and you will take a few side roads and short deviations before climbing steeply into the heart of the coastal mountains. It will be an inspirational day with remarkably quiet and scenic riding.

Day 9: Timber Cove — San Francisco

Your last stage will take you on Highway One along the scenic Sonoma coastline through the quaint villages of Bodega Bay, Tomales, Point Reyes, and Bolinas. You will climb a favorite local road in Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Marin County, before passing through Sausalito. Finally, you will make the crossing of the splendid Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco for a celebratory reception at the Rapha Cycle Club San Francisco.
