Step back in time to hunt fossils with a paleontologist
This experience will take you 380 million years into the past to search for fossils near Buffalo, NY. Layers of rock deposited during the Devonian Period are now exposed at the surface, and the 54-acre park provides ample opportunity for exploration. With 15,000 visitors annually, Penn Dixie is ranked as the #1 fossil park in the U.S. and welcomes guests from around the world. Your guide -- one of two Geology PhDs on staff -- will take you on a journey through the layers in search of a range of fossils. Penn Dixie is famous for its trilobites — extinct arthropods who dominated the seas for 270 million years — but other fossils are just as plentiful if you know where to look. During the one-hour guided tour, you’ll visit our most prolific spots where you’re guaranteed to find fossils. Did we mention that you can keep everything you find? This tour will also take you to some places in the quarry where visitors never visit. Your staff guide will help you delve deeper to find some of the rarer Penn Dixie fossils.
