Collection of Burgundy vs. Napa Wines by Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega
Even for the most expert of wine enthusiasts, nothing beats trying a rare, limited-edition wine. IfOnly gives you both exclusivity and education in this set from Jean Hoefliger’s inaugural wines with the label Pact(e). Because each of the bottles were produced from a single barrel, they are exemplary expressions of their grapes and respective terroir. They were selected to accentuate both the similarities and the differences between wines from California's Napa Valley and France's Burgundy.
One of the collections features the Carneros region of Napa Valley. In a cooler climate, the Chardonnay was able to flourish, developing full ripeness over a long growing season. It exhibits fruity aromas of pear, apricot, and white peach along with almonds and brioche which lead into a fresh palate of citrus flower, orange blossom, star fruit, and vanilla bean. Because of the Carneros region’s longer growing season, the pinot noir from the same Toyon Vineyard is a deep, dark wine with complex aromas of strawberry, raspberry, violet, rose, cedar, and hints of dried herbs.
As a point of comparison to Napa Valley wines, Jean has selected two wines of the same varietals from the Côte de Beaune of Burgundy. Well known for its limestone soil, Meursault enjoys one of Burgundy’s warmer climates and delivers Chardonnay with full, round flavors, good acidity, and intense limestone minerality. This wine displays characteristic Meursault roundness and bright, balanced acidity. Apple, lemon, and floral aromas with hints of brioche and vanilla carry over onto the complex palate.
As a foil to Napa, Jean brings you a pinot noir from the Côte de Beaune. The Premier Cru Vineyard Les Graviêres lies in the town of Santenay. The area is known for slightly warmer temperatures and the limestone hills that impart lofty aromatics and distinctive minerality to the wines. After traditional whole-cluster fermentation in stainless steel, the wine was aged for 14 months in barrel (35% new oak). This red Burgundy opens with vivid, elegant hints of violet, red plum, cherry, and strawberry. The characteristic minerality lifts up the aromas and flavors for a light, almost aerial effect.
