A New California Sensibility: Gift Set of 2 Pinot Noirs from Next-Generation Winemakers
Change has come to California wine country, where winemakers are increasingly departing from fruit bombs in favor of nuanced flavors that reflect the terroir. At the center of this movement is Micah Joseph Wirth and Adrian Jewell Manspeaker, who started out in a garage in 2006, and have quietly expanded to make wines that tend to emphasize discretion rather than bombast. This collection, which is exclusive to IfOnly, reflects California’s next generation. Joseph Jewell’s 2012 vintage is a top 100 wine of the year, which put the two winemakers on the radar of many collectors. It is a savory, age-worthy Pinot Noir from Sonoma County’s Hallberg Vineyard, a dry-farmed site, which produces small berries with extremely concentrated flavors.
The wine entices with an alluring perfume of cranberry, cherry, Asian spice, forest floor, and wet rock. Red fruits dominate the palate, offering depth in harmony with soft tannins and bright acidity. Complementing this pairing is a 2013 Pinot Noir, which is a special barrel selection from Micah and Adrian’s favorite Russian River vineyard sites. This wine, which is sophisticated from start to finish, beckons with a bouquet of raspberry and black cherry laced with hints of rose petals and violets.
