Joseph Amster is a San Francisco tour guide, journalist and amateur historian. In 2011, he brought his love of the city to life by founding the Time Machine Tour, offering historical walking tours of the city led by the city’s most eccentric historical characters. Since opening, Emperor Norton’s Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine has received rave reviews and has been entertaining and informing thousands of locals and tourists alike. Joseph has has since expanded onto food tours, offering tasting tours of North Beach and the Mission District. He is currently working on a book titled Created in California: The Golden State’s Gifts to Gastronomy.

Whether you're a newbie or a native, this is the ultimate food tour of the Mission. Joseph is personable and energetic, with a wealth of knowledge as a local historian and former chef. We visited legendary spots as well as off-the-beaten-path treasures. Joseph seems to know everyone so we were greeted with smiles and insider tips. Arrive hungry!

Joseph provides an informative walking tour in a historic neighborhood of San Francisco with a personal charm and warmth welcoming each of us to a new community. The food he provided at each venue visited was delicious and we were received at each venue as party of a local group by each proprietor. This walk was a great "ice breaker" for anyone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have gone back to the neighborhood since and eaten at one of the restaurants Joseph pointed out to us.
I hope North Beach restaurateurs realize the value this tour provides for their business.
Highly recommend his food tour with a good mix of history.

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to seniors and the critically ill. Our food is like medicine, helping clients recover from illness, get stronger, and lead healthier lives.
Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of old age. We serve San Francisco and Alameda Counties, engaging more than 125 volunteers every day to nourish our community.
