Matt Hawkins is a Bay Area local. He moved to San Francisco to peruse the traditional route of higher education, but quickly found that coffee caught his attention much more than the material being taught in classrooms. The passion grew and so did his thirst for knowledge and practice. Slowly climbing his way up the quality ladder, Matt has worked in cafes for 7 years. Each job opportunity lead him one step closer to the elusive perfect cup of coffee, until finally the world of specialty coffee opened up for him.
Matt's current title of Lead Barista at a large specialty coffee shop puts him as the first line of defense in quality control, and the point person for training new barista's on the busy service floor. Matt does what he does because he loves it, and for no other reason. His passion is what makes him who he is, and some say that it is contagious.
Matt endlessly seeks to spread coffee knowledge across the globe in an easily accessible way, while striving for a level of quality in coffee most would only dream possible in professional cafe environments.

Had a fabulous time with Matt. My husband and I learned a lot about how even just a little change in quantity or grind size or tamping can make a different cup of coffee. We got a similar scale and it had helped, especially me. Be proud of me Matt, I made my own coffee this last week and it turned out great! Mind you our latte art needs more work, but coffee has been delicious. Looking forward to a class on roasting, let us know!

We learned so much about coffee and how to make a better cup in just two hours. The only downside is that now when I buy a cup of coffee (or brew one) I can tell if it is a bad cup and why it is bad. Most importantly, Matt taught us how to make adjustments and work with the equipment we already had to improve our daily cup of coffee.

Great time fine tuning my espresso and latte art skills! Matt was able to tailor the experience to my skill level. He’s so knowledgeable and funny! Will most likely repeat this experience in a few months after I’ve had a chance to work on the tips he’s given me :)
