The San Francisco Zoo
(11)The origins of the San Francisco Zoo can be traced back to 1886. Once part of the now-defunct amusement park Woodward’s Gardens, the menagerie opened with a lone California grizzly bear. The zoo’s mission has evolved from an animal showcase to a state-of-the-art care and wellness facility focused on conservation. It is home to over 1,000 exotic, endangered, and rescued animals representing more than 250 species. The zoo also has several lush gardens of native and foreign plants, making it a place for family memories. The historic 1921 Dentzel Carousel and the 1904 miniature Little Puffer Steam Train are treasured by generations of visitors. In the fall of 2013, the zoo reopened the newly restored Elinor Friend Playground.

This was a truly unique experience. I had purchased this event for my wife and myself. I do not know exactly what I was expecting at first, but the size and scope of these animals are amazing. It is not something that I appreciated until I was able to get as close as I did.

Feeding the giraffes was an incredible experience! Our guide, Bob, was fantastic and very informative. I highly recommend this outing! It's such a great opportunity to get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures!
22/01/19A Bug's Life: Behind the Scenes of the Insect Habitat with the Zoo's Insect Curator
If you love learning about insects, arachnids and other bugs — this is great way to get behind the scenes at the SF Zoo's Insect Zoo. While I'm not much for holding bugs, my wife loved being able to hold a variety of the little crawlers — and we both learned a lot about a variety of species. Thank you guys, it was great!
22/01/19Wander Among Lemurs in Their State-of-the-Art Forest Habitat
What a wonderful time we had in the Lemur Forest with Laura, the lemur zoo-keeper! The lemurs themselves are amazing, and it was a special experience to get such an up-close and personal view of them while visiting with them in their habitat. Also, a shout out to our zoo escort Kaija - she was the glue that held our entire zoo experience together. Thank you all again for a great day!

Katherine, our tour guide was exceptional. We really felt that she was there to make the day wonderful for us. She was knowledgeable about the zoo, its history, and future plans; she laughed at our jokes, and made us feel welcome and comfortable. A cart was provided to transport us to various exhibits. The cart was extremely helpful as it made it possible for one of our members with mobility difficulties to attend the outing. In addition, the cart and Katherine, enabled us to see several highlights including a newborn giraffe and a lion cub. Sandy, the grizzly keeper, was very friendly, encouraged, and answered, our questions, and willingly shared her expertise for 30 - 45 minutes. The ability to go behind the scenes with Sandy, and the bears, was a dream come true for us. I think this is a great program and should be expanded to other animals.

What an amazing experience for adults and kids! We really got to get close and personal with many types of insects. The insect curator was so knowledgable, and we found out so many interesting facts! It was also great to hear about and see how the SF Zoo is helping the ecology of San Francisco as a whole.
