ABOUT THE LUMINARY

Chi Chi Rodriguez

Chi-Chi Rodriguez

Former Professional Golfer

A charismatic figure on and off the course, Chi Chi Rodriguez is a famous late bloomer of professional golf. Born into poverty in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez used the branches of guava trees as his first golf clubs before eventually becoming a caddy at a nearby course. Rodriguez turned pro in 1960; and three years later won the Denver Open, the first of eight PGA Tour titles between 1963 and 1979. However, it was during his time on the Senior PGA Tour for golfers over 50 years old that Rodriguez dominated the game. Since 1985 he has won 22 titles, tied for seventh most of all time. In 1992 Rodriguez was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Phil Rodgers

Phil Rodgers

Top 50 Golf Instructor

Unlike most professional golfers, Phil Rodgers’ accomplishments on the course are matched by his success as a coach. Bursting onto the scene with a win at the 1958 NCAA Championship, Phil would go on to win five PGA Tour titles, including the 1962 Los Angeles Open. But it is his career as an instructor that has really made him a legend of the game. The Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus, credits Phil with turning his game around and helping him win the 1980 U.S. Open. Now, Phil’s prowess as a teacher is world-renowned, and he has been among Golf Digest's Top 50 instructors every year since the list's inception.

Golfers Against Cancer

The funding by Golfers Against Cancer (GAC) has led to proof of concept cancer research, resulting in 10-to-1 and sometimes 100-to-1 funding from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Health and other governmental sources. GAC focuses on specific projects with measurable results in an expected timeframe. Through their interaction with the beneficiaries and seeing what the combination of money and research can do, they know that their vision is reachable. Their mission is to raise as much money as possible to fund promising cancer research projects that result in saving lives. They are dedicated to raising these funds as an all-volunteer organization where virtually all fund-raising efforts go directly to benefit cancer research versus administrative costs.
