NY Yankees pitching legend CC Sabathia is known for his leadership and exemplary attitude on and off the field. In 2008, while with the Cleveland Indians, CC Sabathia founded PitCCh In, a 501 (c)(3) dedicated to helping the communities that have given them so much. With the support of CC’s mother, Margie Sabathia-Lanier, and a dedicated team of professional staff and volunteers, the foundation showcases three signature programs that provide young people with the tools to be successful in school and on the field: All-Star Baseball Clinic, Youth Backpack Program and Field Renovations. CC and his wife Amber were motivated by not only the idea of giving back, but by developing a long-term platform with the foundation to provide young people with the belief in their abilities and to make their dreams become a reality. We caught up with Amber Sabathia to ask her a little more about the work of PitCCh In and what’s next.
Q. How did PitCCh In get started?
CC and I grew up in the inner city and experienced challenges that motivated us to give back. CC was a member of the Boys & Girls Club and played little league while growing up in Vallejo. He received so much guidance, mentorship, and opportunity through the organization that we knew when the time was right we wanted to start our own foundation to help kids in the most hands-on way possible. So, in 2008, we founded the foundation and it’s been a wonderful whirlwind ever since!
Our mission is to enrich the lives of inner-city youth by raising their self-esteem through educational and athletic activities. We do this through our three staple initiatives including the All-Star Baseball Clinic, Youth Backpack Program and Field Renovations. We were really motivated by not only the idea of giving back, but by trying to develop a long-term platform to provide young people with the belief in their abilities and to make their dreams become a reality.
Q. What is one project that PitCCh In is really proud of?
Our priority is to make a difference in the lives of youth...We hit several milestones the past few years and we’re are very proud of our three field renovations and distributing 50,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to inner-city youth.
Over 1500 kids have been part of our baseball clinic on the West Coast, each of the backpacks we distribute to kids can save a struggling family approximately $110. We’re thrilled our charity partners have helped us distribute over $3.9 million in supplies. Last, we’ve helped create places for kids to learn and grow into leaders. We’ve renovated 3 baseball fields and 3 Youth centers, and we’re looking at doing more!
We love just seeing all the kids that we’ve worked with for years and years. It’s amazing to watch them grow and do great things as they return to the various events each year. It means a lot to see what we’re doing for these kids long term, to see them empowered and encouraged to believe in their dreams.
Q. What’s next for PitCCh In?
Lots of exciting things in the works! Currently, we’re getting ready to renovate our 4th baseball field and planning our PitCCh In Holiday party where we host all the kids who have been a part of the foundation throughout the years. It keeps us busy but it’s fun and we love doing it.
We’re grateful to Amber and the CC Sabathia team for taking the time to talk with us, and we can’t wait to see what they do next!
